Castle Garden

Friday, October 1, 2021

The famous garden of the scientist Zsuzsanna Lorántffy, where tulips brought from Holland, roses, tarragon, hyssop, herbs and exotics bloomed. During excavations before the paving work in the garden, the ruins of a cannon foundry were discovered, and the artefacts were soon put on display. A newly cast cannon is visible at the north-east bastion of the outer rampart. It is also worth visiting the horse statue of Ferenc Rákóczi II and the historical playground in the garden! At the gates of the garden is the former monastery of the Trinitarians, who took their name from the Holy Trinity and were responsible for the exchange of prisoners. They gave themselves up for others to be captured! The building is now known as the Church of the Muses and houses the memorial room of the composer Ferenc Farkas. The cellar of the monastery is a monument known as the Rákóczi Cellar and is open to visitors. The 900-barrel Rákóczi Cellar under the monastery can be visited by appointment only.
