Testimonial:

Our route starts from the Budapest – Balaton bicycle path, from the top of the Biatorbágy viaduct, which passes by many local attractions. The natural and cultural sights of the settlement belonging to the Budapest agglomeration with a population of about 14,000 can be explored during our trip.

Route:

Our starting point, the railway function of the valley bridge, is no longer in use, and a pedestrian and bicycle path passes through it. The most important monument of the settlement became famous in the context of an terror attack in 1931, during which a part of the express train travelling there fell into the abyss, causing the death of 22 people.

The ruins of the Szent Kereszt Kápolna (Holy Cross Chapel) is reached after travelling about 3 km. Leaving the bicycles at the foot of the hill, you can walk up the cemetery to the ruins, where the graves of Soviet soldiers killed in the last weeks of World War II can also be seen. There is a nice view of the surrounding countryside from above.

Our journey passes the Szily and then the Sándor-Metternich mansion, which are not open to visitors, so we may admire the buildings from the outside.

Our tour ends in a resting place with an excellent view of Bia Lake, where tables and benches are also available for relaxation and picnics.

The route passes mostly on high-quality asphalt, with a 1-km section of gravel road. Short sections of the route are lead on more busy roads, where we should pay special attention! From here, you can return to the Budapest-Balaton bicycle route in the inner area of Biatorbágy.

Embarkation point: Biatorbágy, viaduct (Budapest – Balaton bicycle route)

To whom do we recommend: mountain bikers

How to get out: the Biatorbágy railway station is located just over a kilometer from the base of the viaduct.
