The point of entry at the border is most easily accessed from Fertőd, from main road 85 linking Győr to Sopron, which runs some 3 kilometers south of the city Railway line Győr-Sopron follows the southern border, but its stopping point is not in the city; the nearest railway connection possibilities on this line are offered by Fertőszentmiklós or Petőháza railway station.
Tour description:
One of the most popular routes along the lake is crossed by EuroVelo 13 in Hungary. The Fertő area was included in the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2001 under the cultural landscape category. In addition, the Fertő region is also a national park as part of Fertő-Hanság National Park. There are countless cultural and folk sights in neat villages, while natural environments with educational paths and natural displays offer an alternative view. This section also includes the Esterházy Castle in Fertőd. However, the route here crosses Fertőrákos, and a short Austrian section later it reaches Sopron via Ágfalva. From Ágfalva to Sopron, until the Austrian border at Harka The route is almost entirely on a cycle path or bicycle lane. It is worth stopping in Sopron to spend multiple, but at least half a day exploring the city. Sights and attractions are very close by in the inner city. However, there are strolling and small paths here, please keep a close eye on where you are going. Sopron is famous for the Fire Tower, but the mining museum, the forestry museum, the Patika Museum and several churches are close by as well. Leaving the city, we head to Harka, and then until Kőszeg, EuroVelo 13 goes almost all the way in Austria.
On the road in Burgenland
After leaving the Austrian-Hungarian border, we continue along the eastern part of Burgenland in Austria, through small villages on high-quality and low-traffic roads. Sometimes the route crosses over to Hungary for a few kilometers, then returns fully to Hungary just before Kőszeg.
Sights:
Fertőd Castle:
Fertőd came into the possession of the Esterházy family in the second half of the 17th century. They are also responsible for the impressive Esterházy castle, the most famous sight of the city. As leader of the family’s orchestra, Joseph Haydn Austrian composer lived here for two decades. The Quarry of Fertőrákos The mine, which draws nearly two hundred thousand people each year, is located in the north of the municipality. According to geologists, Leitha limestone formed in the Miocene epoch, about 12 million years ago, and was already mined by the Romans, even for the construction of Scarbantia’s walls, the antecedent of Sopron.
Mithras Shrine:
It is a former place of worship of the mystery religion linked to the cult of Mithras. It is located in Fertő-Hanság National Park and the cultural landscape on the list of UNESCO’s world heritage site. The sacred edifice covered by a protecting layer is a unique treasure as there are only four such places in Hungary. On the eastern and southern side, the north and south facing building has naturally formed rock walls, while the rest are of stone.
