The easy cycling tour from Tokaj to Sátoraljaújhely highlights the historical and natural attractions of the settlements along the Bodrog River. Its route follows the properly sign-posted EuroVelo 11 route. The panorama of Zemplén, its hills, valleys, vineyards and the Bodrog River will accompany you along the way. You will see castles, Romanesque and Gothic churches, Jewish monuments, Renaissance, Baroque and Romantic architecture, centuries-old wine cellars and museums. The monuments, the magnificent views of the hilly landscape and the river are a lasting memory for those who take the route.
Starting from the Tokaj railway station at the confluence of the Tisza and Bodrog rivers, the tour passes through the UNESCO World Heritage-listed town centre of Tokaj, then along the Bodrog to Szegilong. The top of the Dereszla Hill is worth the climb for the fantastic view: the whole area is in front of your eyes - and you can have a nice picnic on the top.
You will visit the small jewel box settlements of Tokaj-Hegyalja along the Bodrog, between the foot of the Zemplén mountains and the Bodrog River. We can take a short detour to the Bodrogzug, a beautiful landscape with lakes, marshes and wetlands, even in its pristine state - a real tourist attraction. In Olaszliszka, one of the most important Hasidic Jewish pilgrimage sites in the Hegyalja, you are silenced under the only remaining wall of the former synagogue.
You take some time in Sárospatak, perhaps the most time-consuming stop on the tour - Athens on the Bodrog, a small town rich in monuments, cultural heritage, historical values and collections. The most important attraction of the town and the region is Sárospatak Castle. Leaving the town, you reach the final destination, Sátoraljaújhely, while admiring the southern hills of the Zemplén.
